Sanctuary for Families

The American Foundation for Suicide is the leading national organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.  AFSP has been at the forefront of a wide range of suicide prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. Provided data about suicide, such as the rise in teen suicides, and the fact that there is a suicide attempt estimated to occur every minute of every day in the US. Breast Health Initiative

The Breast Health Initiative is an outreach of the Whitman Walker Clinic that provides education to the lesbian community about breast cancer and other matters relating to women’s health.  Discussion focused on breast cancer awareness as it pertains to lesbians and how they are more likely to go unscreened and untested. Also stressed the need for Lesbians to become better educated about self examinations and breast cancer detection, and to effectively communicate with their health providers. Komen Greater New York

Komen Greater New York was founded in 1990 by friends of the late television journalist Benita Feurey  who are committed to keeping her memory alive by providing breast health education, screening, treatment, and other services to individuals in the five boroughs of New York City, on Long Island, and in Westchester and Rockland Counties. Since its inception, Komen Greater NYC has raised over $40 million. Phoenix House is one of our nation’s oldest and leading drug and alcohol abuse treatment organizations for teens and adults.  Spotlighted September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  Discussed the state of drug abuse in America and provided information about treatments.  Discussed the current rash of reality shows about addiction and the positive and negative aspects of those types of shows.  Also discussed the Obama administration’s efforts to provide more resources for those suffering from addiction and also to focus on the causes of addiction and help prevent the problems before they start. Young Adult Library Services Association - YALSA

The Young Adult Library Services of America or YALSA is a division of the American Library Association, which supports librarians by providing them with training, and continuing education so they can meet the needs of their communities.  Focused on Teen Read Week, which is a national program held from October 18 through October 24, and is an initiative designed to promote pleasure reading for young people, so they begin to think of it as being not only fun, but also as an opportunity to experience the world around them.  Discussed the special events that libraries throughout all 5 boroughs will be sponsoring throughout the week.  Also, discussed the changes in libraries and how they have grown to meet the challenges of competing with modern technology.  For more information click here.

White Plains Medical Center Prostate Cancer Clinic

NYC & Company

NYC & Company was developed to create awareness about all the great things about New York City.  Mr. Fertitta was chosen by Mayor Bloomberg to spearhead the initiative to promote the City throughout the world.  Spotlighted NYC and Company’s two latest efforts:  Fashion’s Night Out which will be held on Thursday, September, 10 and many of the city’s retailers will be holding special events and staying open until 11pm.  Fashion’s Night Out is a collaboration between NYC & Company, CFDA, and Vogue to help struggling retailers, and boost the economy.  During the same week, NYC & Co. will host NY400 Week, commemorating the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York Harbor and will be a weeklong citywide celebration of the relationship between New York City and The Netherlands, and will culminate with Harbor Day on September 13.  Harbor day will become an annual event to celebrate New York’s waterfronts, and the day will offer a variety of experiences including free ferry rides, free bike rides, and sailing races.  For more information about Fashion’s Night Out and NY 400 Week, visit www.nycgo.com.

The Recovery Project

Montel Williams MS Foundation

Volunteers of America/Operation Backpack

Volunteers of America is one of the nation's oldest and largest faith-based human service organizations, and serves more than 1,800,000 people each year. Volunteers of America-Greater New York is the largest, with close to 70 programs in the tri state area including the Mid-Hudson Valley region, Northern New Jersey and Southwestern Connecticut. Volunteers of America is one of the largest private providers of services to the homeless in the area. Reach Out and Read of Greater New York

Real Medicine Foundation

Dr. Fuchs founded The Real Medicine Foundation in 2005 after working in Sri Lanka for tsunami relief and seeing all the devastation in this area and the children and their families whose lives remain shattered long after aid for the immediate needs has been provided. Jazz for Kids

The Fresh Air Fund
