WCBS-FM Airstaff - Bob Shannon

Bob Shannon
Weekdays 10am-3pm

Bob is a 40 year veteran of radio, who began his career (under the name Don Bombard) in his hometown of Syracuse, N.Y.  There, he developed his announcing skills, and broke into radio by competing with the city's radio stations  while still in high school.  He compiled and printed a weekly record sales chart which he distributed to local record stores. This brought him to the attention of the two then popular rock and roll stations, WNDR and WOLF, where he eventually worked as an announcer, music director, and programmer.  In the late 70's, he moved to Pittsburgh, where he created and hosted the highest rated radio program in the market, The Sunday Night Oldies Party on 13Q (WKTQ).

The early 80's brought him to New York, and to CBS-FM.  He originated the nightly Hall of Fame program, and for 19 years was CBS's successful afternoon drive personality.  Bob combines an expert's knowledge of the history of popular music with a quick wit, tight production and contemporary commentary.

He also has a number of nationally syndicated radio shows and specials under his belt, including The Oldies Countdown and live nationwide broadcasts from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. He hosted the national three hour weekly program Keepin' The 70's Alive as well as the short form daily show, Behind The Hits, based on his book of the same name.

Bob is one of the world's most highly recognized musicologists. As co-author (with John Javna) of the book Behind The Hits, Bob tells the inside stories behind some of the biggest records of the ‘50s,'60's, '70's & ‘80s, translating his breezy radio personality into print.  Bob has interviewed just about every major artist of the rock era providing both information and in many cases, the enduring legacies, of those often-forgotten who built modern pop, rock and soul music.

Although the book is out-of-print, Bob has developed his own flourishing Behind The Hits website. Visitors can read excerpts from the book, as well as articles by guest columnists. Plus, Bob provides extensive research links to artists’ websites and other music related areas on the Internet.

Bob's talents have also been showcased extensively on the Internet with broadcasts on RadioMaxMusic and in collaboration with his wife Connie T. Empress on a weekly Behind the Hits Show. Most recently, Bob was chosen to be one of the dj's on the new soul music station VIP Radio in England.
